Albion Lane Herne
Local knowledge, further pictures, and licensee information would be appreciated. I will be adding the historical information when I find or are sent it, but this project is a very big one, and I do not know when or where the information will come from. All emails are answered.
According to the book on old Herne, the "Albion" was also known as "Albion House" and "Woodman's Hall." The "Albion" was a 3 storey building which appears in Stapleton's Guide of 1838 as "Albion House," a beerhouse, run by Thomas Lindridge, who was also a Bricklayer and Beer Retailer. In the 1851 Census the Albion was occupied by George Taylor, Beerhouse Keeper and General Dealer. George Taylor was still at the Albion in the 1871 Census, being described as a Farmer and Dealer. Ridout & Flower's Directory of 1878 lists George Taylor as the licensee but in 1889 only lists a Mrs Taylor. The "Albion" had closed by 1900 when it was demolished by Mr. C W Welby, a local builder. The 1900 photo show Mr. Welby's demolition team at work.
