Thomas Wolsey features on the sign at the "Cardinal's Error" in Tonbridge. It was Wolsey who suppressed Tonbridge Priory with the blessing of his master, Henry VIII. By way of reparation, the Cardinal promised to build a grammar school in the town, but he fell from favour before he could carry out his promise.

It is said that a young farm girl named Nellie who drowned in the pond behind the pub some centruries ago is said to haunt the Lodge Oak Lane pub.
