Traced back as early as 1686 as the "Three Horseshoes" and changed name some time between 1764 and 1766 to the "Coach and Horses."

(Information below from Brian Brockie, 2017.)

This picturesque, grade II listed, 17th century, timber-framed building has seen service as a public house since 1686 and possibly earlier. Until 1766 - it had been known as the "Three Horseshoes." It currently occupies a footprint of numbers 24 & 25 at ‘the Hill’ in Northfleet and is reputedly haunted by the ghosts of serving maids.

From the Black Eagle Journal 1949.

At the "Coach & Horses," the "Placing of the Hot Cross Bun" is observed every Good Friday. Sharp at noon, the landlord, Mr S F Stewart takes a bun and nails it to the oak beams supporting the ceilings while customers form a circle behind him; then drinks on the house. The bun will later be varnished over. This quaint ceremony was started at the "Coach & Horses" while Mr Bob French was licensee. He put up 15 buns, while Mr Stewart has placed ten. The Coach & Horses is Northfleets second oldest hostelry.
