Although the pub is no longer here and has been demolished and rebuilt as a private residence or flats, previous to the "Greyhound" the area housed the "Bricklayers" and must have changed some time between 1867 and 1874. At present I do not know whether it was a change of name or new build, but the different house number would suggest a rebuild and renumber.

One time a Mason's tied house, but the brewery was bought out by Shepherd Neame in 1956 and the brewery was subsequently closed and has been demolished in 2009.

Local knowledge, further pictures, and licensee information would be appreciated.

I will be adding the historical information when I find or are sent it, but this project is a very big one, and I do not know when or where the information will come from.

All emails are answered.

MAIDSTONE. MISSING BRIDEGROOM.

Arthur Mason, who went through the marriage ceremony on October 21st with Mrs. Millen, of the "Grehound" public house, Wheeler Street, Maidstone, and who was reported to have been missing three days later, has been found drowned in the Medway. leaving the house on October 24th, he was last seen walking along by the gaol wall, and no one having heard or seen of him since, the matter was reported to the police. On Monday morning his body was taken out of the Medway, about 150 yards below Tovil Bridge.

(It seems that Mrs Millen remarried after the death of her first husband Herbert Edwin Millen. However, I later find that she remarries again this time to James Edwin York in March 1910 and takes on the Millen children as well having a child together. Paul Skelton.)

Posting from Facebook page, 3 November 2019.

Mrs. Millen was my late husbands grandmother. I have the post mortem report from the Kent Messenger at the time this happened. It states that Arthur Mason was being stalked by another woman, his mother at the inquest said that he didn't want anything to do with this woman and he had attempted suicide before, apparently according to his mother he was quite a weak man.

Mrs. Millen lost her first husband very young, she had years of tragedy and sadness, she went on to marry a third time to James York and lived happily until her old age.

Karen Millen.
