In 1864 Superintendent Radley of the city police tried to shut down seven pubs as prostitution was rife in the area. This pub was one on the list.

Ind Coope & Co Ltd purchased the pub from Budden & Biggs Brewery Ltd by conveyance and assignment dated 23 March 1931. The pub held a full license.

One time a Mason's tied house, but the brewery was bought out by Shepherd Neame in 1956 and the brewery was subsequently closed and demolished.

The pub and gasometer, seen behind the pub have both been removed (date of writing 2015).
