Above card circa 1900.

From an email received, 10 June 2016.

Hello,

You may be interested, attached a photo of my Great Grandfather, Thomas Woodhams, licensee of the Jolly Gardeners with his wife – photo marked at the back Oct, 1918.

Thomas Woodhams 1918

His son Thomas ran the "Ancient Briton" in Regents park – was called up for WW1 and died in France 1917 – his wife Mag continued to run that house - until the "Ancient Briton" was destroyed in the Blitz, she then ran the "Harlequin" in Islington – she may have been running this already with her son Robert – I am not sure.

His daughter Charlotte married my Grandfather William Hunt and ran a hardware shop and delivery in Dorking. He played the bugle in the local Methodist band and with their known aversion to alcohol I can only imagine there must have been some very interesting family conversations.

Regards.

Dave Shepherd.
