Above photo, circa 1947. Stanley and Molly Wright were the licensees through the war years and later. Sailors would leave gift war trophies to be displayed in the bar. Stanley served as a P.O. in WW1 in the Royal Navy on board the battleship HMS Queen Elizabeth.

Stanley kept a very heavy brass tampion plaque (a seated Elizabeth 1) which can be seen on his immediate left behind the pump handle.

Local knowledge, further pictures, and licensee information would be appreciated.

I will be adding the historical information when I find or are sent it, but this project is a very big one, and I do not know when or where the information will come from.

All emails are answered.

From an email received 14 February 2025.

Hello. I lived in the jolly sailor as a teenager until March 1969 from late 1965.  Edward Craigie was my uncle and when his wife Edie died my mum Jessie, his sister in law moved in to help him.  He was an alcoholic and my mum ran it on his behalf.

Our customers were 95% navy personnel and business was dictated by the movement of royal navy ships plus a few merchant vessels.

We left in March 1969 when my uncle had finally drunk every penny available.  There was I believe one licensee after that.

I surprisingly do have happy memories, and recall that by 15 I was often helping behind the bar.

Eve Bell.
