From the Kent Herald, 26 December 1833
Rochester. Melancholy death.
On Saturday Sunday se'nnight a poor fellow whose name or
former residence is not known, came to the "Kings Arms" public house, at
Rochester, and engaged a bed, for which he paid before returning to
rest. He remained there the whole of the following day, but did not
partake of dinner. On Sunday night he was taken very ill, and both the
landlord and the landlady of the house very humanly paid him every
attention in their power. He was in great agony through the whole of the
night, and at noon on Monday was removed to St. Nicholas's workhouse,
where every attention was paid to him that humanity could suggest; but
he died in a few hours. The great regret is that he never had a lucid
interval from his first attack, by which some information
might have been gained of his name and family. On Tuesday an
inquest was held on the body by Thomas Patton, Esq, Coroner for Rochester, when Mr.
Newson and deposed that he
considered this one of those casualties attending brought on by age and
the fatigue of rambling about the country with a proper sustenance. A
verdict of "Died by the Visitation of God," was returned. We give the
following description of his person in hope that it may meet the eye of
some relative. He was a tall man, about 50 years of age, with a defect
upon the right side of these nose. His dress consisted of a shabby old
black coat, light waistcoat, fustian trowsers, and low shoes. No papers
of any description were found on his person, nor any money in his
pocket.
