The Nevill Family has owned land in Birling since the Manor came into the family in 1435. The family have given England many famous sons, including Richard Nevill, Earl of Warwick, who became known as Warwick the Kingmaker, when his nephew won War of the Roses and became Edward IV.

The Bull changed its name to Nevill Bull in 1953 in memory of Michael Nevill who was killed in WWII. Lieutenant Nevill was serving in Africa with 1st Bn Scots Guards when he died on 28th April 1943 and is buried in Massicault War Cemetery. Lt Nevill is commemorated with all the fallen of Birling on the War Memorial in All Saints Churchyard.
