STEALING PORK.

James Elliott was indicted for stealing a piece of pork, the property of George Davis, at Sittingbourne, on the 26th of August.

The prosecutor was lodging at the "Rose and Crown" beer-house at Sittingbourne, and made use of a cupboard in the house for keeping his food. On the day named in the indictment he placed therein about 3lbs. of pork; at that time the prisoner was drinking in the house. During the evening, in consequence of what the landlady told him, he went to the cupboard and found the pork was gone. The prisoner had in the meantime left the house.

A man named Hubert Cox, who was in the house at the time the pork was missed, stated that he saw the prisoner, who appeared badly off, go to the cupboard, take the pork out, and walk away with it. Witness followed the accused, who said "I own to taking the pork. I did not know it belonged to a poor man, I thought it was the landlord's.

Four months' imprisonment.
