46 Canterbury Street / 1 Green Street Gillingham
The "Royal Oak" is a common pub name, usually commemorating Charles II hiding in an oak tree during his escape after the civil war. Located at the corner of Canterbury Street and Green Street, it opened in the 1860s. This "Royal Oak" was only named after the tree indirectly, as it was actually named after a screw Battleship launched in 1862 at Chatham. It closed in 1999 and is now a fast food take-away.
