Located on the corner of Hythe Street and Orchard Street, the Sportsman lay literally in the shadow of C N Kidd's Steam Brewery and was one of their 65 tied houses. To the left of the pub looks like what could have been the brewery off licence. On the other corner, are the offices of the Dartford Chronicle.

Immediately to the left was the site of Kidds Brewery, which became the Co-op and is now The Orchard West which is a temporary site for the Orchard Theatre which is close by, but is currently shut due to dodgy concrete! (2024).
