The address today is known as Old Perry Street, the Old not always being there.

The pub as we know it today was named after John Robert Townsend, Lord Sydney who was one of the lords of the manor. Previous to this name the premises was known as the "Swan," or perhaps the "White Swan." As yet I don't know when the name changed but it must have been previous to 1862.

From 1875 to 1900 there was a school for local children opposite the pub, established by Lady Emily Sydney, the buildings are still there but the site today (2018) is now part of a timber yard.

South Eastern Gazette, 12 March, 1860.

CHISLEHURST. Sudden Death.

On Thursday last C. J. Carttar, Esq., coroner, held an inquest at the "Sydney Arms," public-house, in this parish, on the body of Martha Paull, a widow 82 years of age. It appeared that the deceased resided with her son, Mr. W. Paull, builder, at Perry-street, and for her advanced age enjoyed very good health. About ten o’clock on Monday night, after having partaken of a hearty supper, she retired to bed, but her son shortly afterwards, hearing an unusual noise in her room, went there, and found her in bed, but she was very sick. She, however, recovered in a short time, and appeared to go to sleep, but was a second time attacked, and expired before Mr. Matthews, surgeon, who was immediately sent for, could arrive.

Mr. Matthews, who had made a post mortem examination by order of the coroner, stated that death resulted from a severe attack of apoplexy, and a verdict was returned accordingly.
