Operating as early as 1867, according to the 1915 photo a tied house to Croyden brewers Crowley & Co, not the Alton brewer as first thought. A.C.S. & H. Crowley Ltd., of Croydon, were taken over by Hoare & Co. Ltd., of the Red Lion Brewery, Smithfield, in 1919 although the Croydon brewery did not cease brewing until 1929. Hoare & Co. Ltd. was in turn taken over by Charringtons in 1933, hence the Walnut Tree's Charringtons livery. However, the pub must have evaded Watney's clutches, as during the second half of the 20th century it was part of the tied estate of London brewers Charrington's.

The pub closed for good in 2007 and stood empty for some years before being converted for residential use.
