High Street
Blue Town
Sheerness
With quite a few "White Horses" in Sheerness and no definitive address,
some of these may be one and the same.
I have reference to a "Lower White
Horse" in the High Street, an "Old
White Horse" in the High Street of Blue Town, an "Upper White
Horse" at Blue Town, and also a "White
Horse" High Street, Blue Town, and another "White
Horse" addressed as Mile Town.

From the Kent Herald, 28 October 1824.
Calendar of Prisoners.
Stephen Matthews alias Steven Williams and William Williams alias William Baker,
were indicted for stealing a female donkey, in the parish of Egerton, the
property of James Coppins.
James Coppins, the prosecutor, stated, that he missed the donkey on the 13th of
June last, and after many searches found it in July, at Sheerness.
James Marshall deposed that on the 20th of July, he found the donkey at the
"White Horse Inn," Sheerness, in possession of the prisoners. Matthew
strenuously declared the ass to be his property. The prisoner Williams declared
he had no previous knowledge of Matthews to meet him on the road a mile or two
from Sheerness, when they fell into conversation and kept company together.
Thomas Clayton corroborated Marshall's evidence.
William Smith swore he saw the two prisoners together on the 20th July, at Iwade,
seven miles from Sheerness; they were driving the donkey before them.
Verdict:- Guilty. Transported seven years.

From the Kent Herald, 11 October 1827.
On Friday last, an inquest was held at the "White Horse Inn", before Robert
Hinde, Esq, Coroner, on the body of Mrs. Elizabeth Field, wife of Mr. John
Field, butcher, Blue Town, Sheerness, who was supposed to have come by her death
through ill treatment.
Several Witnesses deposed as to the conduct of Field towards his wife, in
beating and kicking her; but a verdict of "Died by the Visitation of God" was
returned on the evidence of two surgeons, who stated that they had opened the
body, and they that there did not appear, either internally or externally, any
marks of violence.
