Chislet
According to Michael David Mirams in his book "Kent Inns and Inn Signs" there used to be a "Bell Inn" in the village, but this closed in 1736 and was converted into the parish poorhouse. The "Six Bells" may have been the successor to this inn, and in 1833 meetings were held there to discuss a purpose-built workhouse for Chislet. The Poor Relief Funds were dispensed liberally by their trustees, who purchased dinners, tobacco, punch, tea and cider to liven up the proceedings.
Project 2014 has been started to try and identify all the pubs that are and have ever been open in Kent. I have just added this pub to that list but your help is definitely needed regarding it's history. As the information is found or sent to me, including photographs, it will be shown here. Thanks for your co-operation.
