Southeastern Gazette, 11 January 1853.
DEPTFORD.
The late Death from Poisoning.
The adjourned inquest, touching the death of Mr. John Clements,
captain of the Government hoy Mary, who was supposed to nave been
poisoned by tincture of the seeds of colchicum, given him by the
assistant surgeon of the Rosamond, was resumed on Tuesday last, at
the "Black Horse Tavern," Lower-road, Deptford. It then appeared
that Mr. Ray, the assistant surgeon, had not made up or administered
the medicine, but the deceased had received it from a man employed
to clean up the surgery, who had since left the vessel, and no one
knew where to find him. Under the advice of the coroner an open
verdict was returned.

Deptford’s Black Horse pub could reopen as the Wolf’s Tavern.
A long-closed Deptford pub could be making a comeback, with a fresh
licensing application now in the hands of Lewisham Council.
Wolf’s Pub & Guest House Ltd has applied for a new club premises
certificate at the Wolf’s Tavern on Evelyn Street, previously known
as the Black Horse.
If approved, the establishment would be permitted to host live and
recorded music and serve late-night refreshments on Fridays and
Saturdays from 11pm to 2am.
Additionally, the pub has applied for an extension to its alcohol
service hours.
Under the proposal, alcoholic beverages would be available for
consumption on the premises from 11.30am to 11pm from Sunday to
Thursday, and from 11.30am to 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.
The application also includes a request for seasonal variations,
allowing all of the above activities to continue until 2am on
Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's Eve.
The application comes after the historic pub, which first opened in
the 1870s or 1880s, shut its doors in December 2022.
It was officially marked as closed long-term in July 2024, leaving
locals wondering what would become of the distinctive Victorian
building.
The former Truman’s Brewery pub was known for its striking tiled
exterior, an original 1930s Vitrolite ceiling, and an impressive
centre bar according to CAMRA. |
