All census reports up to 1911 referred to this simply as the "Lion", the 1911 census is the first one that give the name the "Black Lion." I believe this has also been addressed as Green Street, Teynham During alterations at the Black Lion, in the late 1970s, a carved coat-of-arms of Lord Teynham, dated 1687. The noble lord owned much land in the area, and the pub name may have connections with his family.
Project 2014 has been started to try and identify all the pubs that are and have ever been open in Kent. I have just added this pub to that list but your help is definitely needed regarding it's history. As the information is found or sent to me, including photographs, it will be shown here. Thanks for your co-operation.
