The pub was destroyed by enemy action in early 1943. A bomber trying for the naval yards hit a school and the pub. John Leggett and all his staff were killed, and John's body was never found. The only survivor was the pub monkey, who then had to be destroyed as it went mad.

Blackheath Petty sessions. Alterations.

Plans were submitted by Mr. Roberts on behalf of Mr. John Francis Taylor for alterations at the "Chichester Arms," St. Paul, Deptford; and by Messrs. Murray and Foster on behalf of Mr. William Peron for alterations at the "Gosterwood Hotel," in the same parish.

Both were sanctioned by the Bench.
