PUB LIST PUBLIC HOUSES Paul Skelton

Earliest 1849-

Commercial Inn

Latest 1850

(Name to)

Customs House / 52 Harbour Place

Ramsgate

The "Commercial Inn" was operating in 1849 and the licence was transferred to the new "Shipwrights Arms", and stood roughly where the Customs House is now. It served workers at the shipwright's yards which stood on the main sands until the railway arrived in 1863.

George Hodge seems to take over the site of the "Commercial Inn" in 1849, at 52? Harbour Place; Audrey Law Hosegood says:- "I have found a second source for this And renovating? takes a year to “Open”.

This “new” pub/hotel is called the “Shipwright’s Arms”; as shown from the 1849 map for this pub and it seems it was a few doors down from the current location at 88 Harbour Parade.

We know George and family were at #88 by 1871 per the census data; I am not sure (YET?) when they relocated from #52 to #88, which is an even more strategic location.

If/when I figure out when they moved, I will send you a second message… there were no newspaper clippings to confirm the timing of this move.

I am beginning to believe that the full name for this pub was actually the "Shipwrights Arms and Commercial Inn."
