Old England. Saturday 13 December 1834.
Greenwich, Tuesday.
Before Col. Forman, R. Smith, J. Thackeray, and F. G. Hamond, Esqrs.
Jesse Hill, landlord of the "Earl of Chatham" public house,
Hughes-fields, Deptford was charged with willfully breaking a gas
lamp in Church Street, Greenwich, at half past two o'clock that
morning.
J. Lockwood, a private watchman in Church Street, deposed that he
saw the defendant and another young man in that street at the above
hour, when the former asked him for a light. He replied that he had
none, and there was no public house open. Hill then said, "Suppose I
was to break that lamp;" when suiting the action to the word, he
took something out of a box, which he pulled out of his pocket, and
dashing it against the lamp, broke two squares of glass. A policeman
then came up and took him into custody. He was intoxicated at the
time. The defendant denied that he broke the lamp willfully. He had
had a pipe in his hand, and wanting to light a cigar, he threw the
pipe away, and it went through the lamp. He was fine 4s. for the
damage done, 40s. penalty, and 10s. costs, which he immediately
paid.

John Kelly, "Earl of Chatham" public-house, Deptford, was summoned
for Sunday trading. Sergeant Gale stated that he stationed himself
in a house opposite the defendant’s, and in the course of
half-an-hour three persons left, and twenty-eight entered. Mr.
Lewis, of the firm of Lewis and Lewis, appeared for defendant, and
argued that no conviction could be proved unless the sale of ale was
actually proved. Mr. Traill not being of the same opinion, fined the
