Now part of Greater London, this area was indeed Kent before 1965. Hence, I will be adding information regarding this pub as and when I find or it is sent to me, but at present I'll be concentrating on the areas that are within the Kent boundary today.

From the Kent Herald, 1 November 1827. Deptford.bmp"

On Tuesday an inquest was held at the sign of the "Five Bells," Deptford, on view of the body of a young woman (name unknown) taken out of the Surrey canal.

Mr. Maddocks, a dairy-man, stated, that he found a bonnet on the banks of the canal at an early hour. After a diligent search he discovered the body of a fine young woman, who was most probably married, having on the wedding finger two rings, one of which was a plain gold ring, the other a hoop. She had on a Leghorn bonnet, laced cap, a green shawl with a figured border, and drop ear-rings in her ears. Some of her linen had the initials M. T. upon it. No marks of violence were visible on her person.

Verdict, "Found Drowned."
