Huntsman Lane

Boxley

At present the only reference to this pub has been from Pigot's directory, which unfortunately didn't give an address other than Boxley.

Further research has seen this mentioned in the Kentish Gazette of 15 July 1794, and also the Dover Chronicles of 1847 which suggests the pub was near to the "Queen Ann" in Queen Ann Road, Maidstone.

I do have reference to a "Huntsman" in Maidstone, and believe this may well be one and the same.

Dover Chronicles 6 February 1847.

Attempted Highway Robbery.

On Friday night last, about half past 11 o'clock, as Mr. R. Green of Boxley, was passing along the lane, between the Huntsman's Cottage, and the "Huntsman" public house, he saw a man standing in the hedge, and having passed him shortly afterwards, met another taller man. Before he came up to the latter, however, the first man had pinioned his arm from behind. A struggling ensued, in which Mr. Green and the man both fell; they got up again and having a stout codgel, Mr. Green immediately gave the shortest man a severe blow, which felled him to the ground; when he defended himself against the taller man, who advanced to attack him, and managed to beat off the two, who immediately began to pelt him with stones, when he ran to the "Queen Anne" for assistance. It was a very bright moonlight night, but Mr. Green could not recognise his assailants, who were not to be found on his return with assistance to the same spot.
