Dale Street Ordnance Place

Chatham

I have only found the one reference to this establishment at present and that was in the Licensing Records of 1872. The records stated that the premises operated under a Beer License with Off-license and was owned by James Gater of Fort Row, Ordnance Place.

Michael Tate tells me the following:- On the 1861 there is a Henry Wilstead, 'retailer of beer' at Leeds Castle. Looking at the enumerator's route, he came down Colegate Terrace (now Rochester Street) and then turned into New Street and collected returns from 12 hours (which matches maps from the time - there were twelve houses on the north side of New Street). The next entry is a 'cottage in garden', then Leeds Castle, and then Leeds Cottage. He then carries on down into Bowles Dale.

The south side of New Street and the land to its south were yet undeveloped and a map of 1869 shows open land on the south of New Street with the school at the west end and a couple of buildings (unlabelled) to the school's east. I suspect these were the two cottages and the Leeds Castle. They had gone by the end of the century so were probably knocked down to make way for Pagitt Street and other residential developments.
