Enlisting.

George and Christopher Benjamin were on Tuesday charged with defrauding a couple of recruiting sergeants each out of a shilling. The prisoners had been drinking for some hours at the "Little Crown," Deptford, where the recruiting sergeants addressed them. According to the sergeants’ statement, it appeared the prisoners were capable of understanding, and that they took the shilling as enlistment money, and after they each said he was single. They were really married men. The prisoners both swore that they said nothing about being single, that they did not take the money as enlistment money, that they laughingly said they would take as many shillings as the sergeants liked, and that they were both quite drunk. The magistrate suspecting that perhaps the prisoners were old offenders, remanded them till yesterday, refusing to take bail. Yesterday the men were again brought up, but the solicitor to the War Department not appearing, they were again remanded till Tuesday, bail, however, being token for their appearance.

From the Borough of Greenwich Free Press, 9 May 1863.

George Baker, 20, Abinger Road, Deptford, (late landlord of the "Little Crown,) appeared in answer to summons charging him with assaulting William Mack, New Street, Deptford, on Saturday night last.

From the evidence it appeared that Mack owned Baker 10s. 6d., money lent and on meeting him in King Street, struck him with a stick on the arm.

In answer to a question as to whether Baker was sober, witness said that he was "three parts tight," which defendant denied, saying that "he was fit for military duty."

Mr. Maunde fined him 40s. The summons of Baker against Mack was then heard, and he was bound over in the sum of £20 to keep the peace towards Baker.
