Gravel Hill
Greenhithe
The only reference I have found so far for this pub is in the Pigot's
Directory of 1832.
Previously called the "Three
Horseshoes" probably closed between 1951 and 1858, was opposite the
"Railway
Tavern" and renamed to Ivy Cottage after closure.
Further research has found the following passage.
North West Kent Burials 1825 Elizabeth Bates, born 1770, age 55, of
the "Plough and Harrow," Gravel Hill, near Greenhythe, buried 17
December 1825 at St. Peter and Paul, Swanscombe.

South Eastern Gazette 05 September 1848.
GREENHITHE. DISCOVERY OF HUMAN BONES.
On Wednesday, the 30th ult., while the workmen were engaged in digging
out the foundation of the "Old Plough and Harrow Inn," they discovered a
human skeleton. It had evidently been there many years, and must have
been interred inside the house, as it was inside the foundation wall,
about two feet below the surface, and at the part where the flooring of
the bar was situated. The skull is in excellent preservation, the teeth
complete, and of good colour; the bones are small. On examination it was
judged to be the skeleton of a woman. |
