Bayle Street

Folkestone

It is believed that this was the forerunner to the "British Lion" and goes back to 1460, indeed parts of the building there today have been traced to 1500, but records can only be traced back to 1782 when it was the "British Lion." However, an as yet unaddressed building in the same area called the "Angel" was operating as a public house from between 1605 and 1646 and was probably one and the same.

The name of the "Priory Arms" implies a connection with the priory or other similar establishment. The name Bayle doubtless derives from bailey which is the term for the outer wall of a mediaeval castle or priory.
