The original public house was situated at the foot of Old Hill and had a pond and green in front of it. It was owned by the local brewery, serving their Fox's Ales for the majority of the 18th century. When the A21 Farnborough Way was constructed at the end of the 1920s the old pub stood on the route of the new road, and it therefore had to be replaced by the present building, set back from the road.
