Royal Oak Inn token

Above token saying ROGER CLARKE around HIS HALF PENY on one side and ROYAL OAK INN DEPTFORD around C over R E on the other. These tokens were used around 1666 and may have been used at this establishment.

According to the Lost Pubs Project the pub been converted into a restaurant and flats, I believe it closed as the "Royal Oak" around about 1922.

The Kentish Mercury says it was a beer house under consideration for closure due to redundancy in 1908.

I have also reference to a "Royal Oak" addressed at Shooter's Hill Road.

From the Borough of Greenwich Free Press, 20 June 1863.

Bridget Stevens, a servant at the "Royal Oak," High Street, Deptford, was charged with stealing a bottle of rum, belonging to her master, Mr. Stevens, who said he was willing to give her another chance, and she was accordingly discharged.

From the Borough of Greenwich Free Press, 19 September 1863.

John Adams, a plasterer, of Garden Stairs, Greenwich, was charged before Mr. Traill, with creating a disturbance at the "Royal Oak," public house, High Street, Deptford, and assaulting John Stevens, landlord.

The disturbance having been proved, the prisoner stated that he merely found fault with the landlord for sending his wife to a convenience at the back of the house, where a number of men had assembled.

Mr. Traill, in ordering the prisoner to enter into his own recognizance, said the wisest thing he could have done, would have been to have held his peace.
