Described as a beer house in 1891.

I also have reference to a "Jolly Sailor" addressed as the same, but it is unknown when the name changed if at all, and that this is not a mistake.

From The Morning Post (London, England), Friday, January 04, 1895.

POLICE INTELLIGENCE. BOW-STREET.

George Bearsby, 22, was charged with theft.

Mr. Wilson prosecuted; prisoner was defended by Mr. Cranshaw.

Prisoner was employed at the Connaught public-house, Holburn, as a barman. In consequence of losses Detective-sergeant Hailstone marked some silver. When the money in the till was counted shortly afterwards, the prisoner being in charge of a bar, a shilling and two sixpences (marked money) were missing. Prisoner said he knew nothing about it, and volunteered to be searched. Subsequently it appeared that he had paid a bailiff named Prouton, who was acting as man in possession of the public-house, 5s. he had borrowed from him some time before. This man, when spoken to, produced one marked shilling and a marked sixpence, but, in reply to Mr. Cranshaw, he said he could not swear that they formed part of the money given to him by the prisoner.

The prisoner's father, who is landlord of the "Sailor," Gravesend, and a publican in the Waterloo-road, were called to speak as to prisoner's respectability.

Sir John Bridge, thinking that no jury would convict, discharged the prisoner. In his opinion there was sufficient evidence to justify the prosecution, but not enough to convict the prisoner.
