Above photo, 1919. Showing WW1 soldiers, the sign says:- The Boys of the Old Brigade back in Blighty.

 

This was mentioned in a book called the "History of Strood" by Henry Smetham, published 1899, who said "Previous to demolition of Bridge, site, opposite Strood Esplanade, Bridge approach. It was situated on the corner of North Street and Gun Lane. A forge spoken of in old parish documents, as the "round about forge," formery occupied this site.

ROCHESTER AND CHATHAM.

On Saturday last, the body of a man was observed floating through Rochester-bridge, which was picked up and taken to the sign of the "Victoria," Strood, and an inquest has since sat on the body. He is supposed to be a person of the name of Winter, of Maidstone, and has been missing five or six weeks.

JAMES BOULDEN DECEASED.

Pursuant to the Statute 22nd and 23rd Victoria, Chapter 35.

All creditors and other persons having any claims or demands against the estate of James Boulden, late of the “Victoria Inn,” North street, Strood, in the County of Kent, Licensed Victualler, who died on the 21st day of November, 1891, and whose Will was proved in the Principal Registry of Probate Division of Her Majesty’s High Court of Justice, on the 10th day of December, 1891, by Kate Boulden, of the “Victoria Inn,” North street, Strood, aforesaid, the widow of the said deceased , the sole Executive therein named, are requested to send particulars of their Claims to me the undersigned on or before the 5th day of January next after which date the said Executrix will proceed to dispose of the assets of the deceased amongst the parties entitled thereto, having regard only to the claims of which she shall then have had notice.

Dated this 14th day of December, 1891.
