Alton Ale House 1914

Above picture, pre 1912, from www.Flickr.com by Ben Levick. Shown just behind the tram pole.

Mentioned in the 1858 Phippen’s Directory as being in the High Street, Brompton.

It was probably a tied house and named after the brewery in Alton, Hampshire.

I am informed by Ben Levick that the pub was burnt down in 1912 and being rebuilt as a three story building with a gable end facing onto the high street, with the name worked into the gable end. It was subsequently closed again no sooner had it reopened by the West Kent Compensation Authority.

The building was demolished c.1977/8.
