With a name of the "Anchor" this more than likely had a naval connection.

This building may have once been the "Anchor" Public House. The "Anchor" is mentioned in a 1902 edition of the Chatham News as being on the corner of Jeffery Street and Gardiner Street, the location of this building. The building certainly has a 'pub' look about it. This building is on the NW side of the junction. Sadly the buildings on the south side of the junction were demolished when Gillingham High Street was redeveloped, although it is known that the "Flower of Kent" Pub once stood on the SE corner of the junction.
