From the Gravesend and Dartford Reporter, 6 April 1867.
Wednesday. Before the Mayor (G. Sams, Esq.), G. Taylor and C. Spencer, Esqrs.
James Barrett, a wire worker, was brought up in custody, charged with
drunken and riotous conduct.
Mr. Isaac Brown stated that about half past 12 o'clock on Tuesday, he,
according to his usual custom in going home to dinner, called at the "Anchor
and Hope," kept by his brother, to get half a pint of beer and look at a
newspaper. As soon as he had seated himself the defendant came in and called
for a pint of beer for himself and mate, and then a little "chaffing"
commenced. Defendant professed to be an old acquaintance of his, and used
exceedingly foul and abusive language towards him because complainant stated
he had no recollection of having before seen him. From foul language the
defendant proceeded to use violence, and compliant had at length to defend
himself with a pewter cup from which he had been drinking. In the fray a
square of glass was broken.
The defendant was fined 5s. for drunkenness and the cost of repairing the
window of the public house, or in default, 7 days imprisonment.
