From an email received 24 December 2014.

Hello from New Zealand,

Was setting up my Xmas deck with old stuff I got in the UK in the early 90's.

Thought I'd Google the sign I have, Borough Shades with a man sitting in a cellar.

Cheers,

John Comer.

There used to be one called the "Borough Shades" in Gravesend, and the pub sign depicted ghosts rising from the graves - it was a very odd sort of place - the front part housed a delicatessen, which you had to walk through in order to get to the bar, and there was a glass ceiling in the back. The delicatessen's long gone, and the pub was taken over by Ryans, so has completely lost it's character, though the glass ceiling's still there.

The 1871 census described this establishment as an eating house. It operated under that name till 1988 and still had a delicatessen in the front. It was then "Ryan's Bar" until 2008, and then "Bar R" until 2012. Information received in March 2016 tells me the pub is currently being "done up" but unfortunately rumour has it that it'll become a hairdressers.

The Lost Pub project refers to this as a beer house called the "Botany Shades" and says it opened as a pub in 1888 and has also been known as the "Ale Shades" but as yet I have no information of these names.
