67 (21) Church Street
Greenwich

Above photo, 1930. |
Also addressed as 16 Church Street in 1871 census, but 21 Church Street
till 1891, when also addressed as at the corner of Thames Street. I am
informed that the building has been demolished but as yet don not know the
date.
Looking at the photo of 1930, it was then operating as a hairdressers and
had again been renumbered to 67.
Project 2014 has been started to try and identify all the pubs that are
and have ever been open in Kent. I have just added this pub to that list but
your help is definitely needed regarding it's history.
As the information is found or sent to me, including photographs, it will
be shown here.
Thanks for your co-operation.
From an email received 21 May 2021.
My Mom told me that she
remembers that this was her grandfather's/ great grandfather's mug
that he used to drink from. She just passed in December at age 93,
so I regret not asking her more information about it. It is quite a
heavy mug. I'm guessing pewter.
It shows the stamp marking of PINT and a shield with a crown
above it....with the letter V/ R on either side of the shield and
the #2 below the shield.
This is the bottom of the mug. The inscription reads.... British
Queen Church St. Greenwich.

From the Kentish Gazette, 24 January 1865.
GREENWICH.
Death from Hydrophobia.
On Wednesday morning a boy named James Rivers, son of parents
residing at Greenwich, died from hydrophobia, occasioned through
being bitten by a mad dog on Wednesday, the 14th ult.
It appears that on the day in question a large dog, of the
retriever breed, and which is supposed to have escaped from some
gentleman’s residence in the neighbourhood of Woolwich, was observed
in some market-grounds adjoining Greenwich marshes, rooting the
earth up in a savage manner. The infuriated animal then made its way
towards the town of Greenwich, first biting an old Greenwich
pensioner in the arm, and then some children, as also other dogs,
finally taking refuge under a table in the tap-room at the "British
Queen" public-house, Greenwich, where police-constable Anderson,
263R, killed it. Among the persons attacked was the deceased, who,
under medical treatment, appeared to progress favourably until a day
or two ago, when he was removed to Guy's Hospital, where he died. It
is feared that other children, who are still suffering, may likewise
fall victims, the owner of a valuable dog, which was also similarly
bitten, having been obliged to have the animal destroyed in
consequence of its exhibiting all the symptoms of madness.
(May be the other "British
Queen.")
