South Eastern Gazette, 11 October 1853.
Suicide.
A young woman, named Eliza Bateman, aged 22, residing as chambermaid
at the "Clarendon Hotel," attempted to commit suicide on Tuesday
week, by cutting her throat with a carving knife, inflicting on
herself three severe wounds. She was found by a porter belonging to
the establishment in an underground passage leading into the garden,
bleeding profusely, and surgical assistance having been promptly
procured, she was removed to the union workhouse, where gangrene
ensued, and she died yesterday week. An inquest was held on the body
on the same day, when it was stated by her brother and other
witnesses that deceased had always been flighty and eccentric in her
manners, and was believed to have been grossly imposed upon by a
young married woman with whom she had formed an acquaintance in
London. The jury returned a verdict of "Temporary insanity."
