The pub exists in the song, "The Maidstone Landlords" in 1798.

The pub appears to have changed name officially to the "Market House" in 1863, but I believe was called this by the locals as early as 1851.

ALTERATION OF THE SIGNS OF LICENSED HOUSES.

On the application of the respective landlords, the signs of the following houses were altered as under:- The "Coal Barge," Earl-street, to the "Market House".
