Commercial Hotel 1923

Above photo 1923.

Built in 1819 as "Wates Hotel" the name changed in 1883 although I have found reference to a "Commercial" in Pigot's Directory of 1832.

The building was situated at the western end of the promenade near Custom House and is reputed to be where Charles Dickens once stayed.

From the Kentish Gazette, 30 May 1837.
