A Chough, pronounced Chuff, is a bird with black plumage and a red bill and legs unlike any other member of the crow family, and found in the west of the British Isles.

In 1582, the innkeeper was Ralph Wellett.

It is believed that the premises was also referred to as the "Three Daws," it's latter day name as early as 1582.

27 July 1667 A Seaman from the 3 Dawes.

 

July 1667 John the son of Gloster Bailes buried the 25th day a seaman from the ???? ???? another from the 3 Dawes buried the 25th day, Edward the son of William Plastow buried the same day.
