The pub is situated on the A233 between Bromley and Westerham close to Biggin Hill Airport, and was once frequented by boisterous Battle of Britain aircrews. The building consists of a newer and an older part, thought to date to the mid 1800s. It is also the setting for a spooky mystery, following a fatal accident in the local chalk mine in 1896. The body of the unfortunate miner was brought to the pub for an inquest and it is said that his spirit still haunts it. Peter Hill informs me that was was once the Toll House is now (2023) occupied by the Shell Tollgate Garage/Filling Station.
