I have just found the photograph of Crown Shades 1911. Over the top is Thomas Richard Lock the licensee, my Great Grand Dad.

My Dad was born in that pub on 10 April 1918. Thomas Richard was a Thames Lighter man somewhere and my Dad said that was how he got rich. In his Will, he left pubs to his other sons, who had worked the water with him, but not the son who later became a licensee: Gaynam Victor Lock my Grand Dad. He was only a tenant licensee according to my Dad. The other sons received freehold pubs. I know little of my Grandad, Gaynam Victor, but Thomas Richard is in Gravesend cemetery with I think his second wife.
