PUB LIST PUBLIC HOUSES Paul Skelton

Earliest 1715-

Crown and Sceptre

Latest 1798+

Under the Cliffe

Maidstone

Mentioned in the song, "The Maidstone Landlords" in 1798.

Les Swaffer tell me that the "Crown and Scepter" was probably where the boat hire place is now and ice-cream kiosk is now, the boat trips along the Medway are booked there. It is under Bishop's way which is part of the Archbishop's Palace, the place behind the little boat.

From the Will of John Mason 1715.

Gentleman of Maidstone, who leaves 'The Crowne and Sceptre' in Maidstone and all his four tenements with the(ir) appurtenances under the Cliffe? And also his Tenements in 'Durham Yard' in Maidstone to his son, John Mason.

This pub is one in the list of my "Project 2014."

As such I haven't found a picture of the pub yet, and to date have not a lot of other information. Local knowledge, further pictures, and licensee information would be appreciated.

I will be adding the historical information when I find or are sent it, but this project is a very big one, and I do not know when or where the information will come from.

All emails are answered.
