Heigham Street (Norwich) Higham
I am informed by Andrew Rootes that this pub, is actually at Heigham Street, Norwich, and is nothing to do with Higham in Kent.
A house formerly known as Bishop Hall’s Palace showing a date of 1615 on the east wing although other parts are likely to have been older, as a date of 1595 used to be shown on another gable end. The house is known to have been built for the Sheriff of Norwich, Richard Brown and a date of 1587 is documented for that, although the build may have also incorporated earlier features. It is definitely an old building which became a pub in the early 1700s and continued until 1942 when it was badly damaged by an incendiary bomb. The owners, Steward & Patteson, rebuilt the damaged structure after the war and it was reopened as a pub in 1960. Unfortunately, in 1999, the owners at the time decided to close the pub and later offered it for sale as a private dwelling. In 2001 it was again damaged by fire but was rebuilt and has since become a chiropractic practice.
