From the Maidstone Journal and Kentish Advertiser, Monday 19 December, 1870.

James Neville, a labourer, was brought up charged with attempting to utter a counterfeit half-crown. The prisoner offered the coin at the "Founders' Arms," on Saturday night. It was at once refused, and when questioned, prisoner said that he knew it was a bad coin, and that he had tendered it in mistake. In reply to the magistrates prisoner said that the coin was given to him by a man who said that it was bad. He put it into his pocket, but did not intend to pass it.

The Bench discharged the prisoner with a caution.
