Daily Mirror, Monday 11 March 1957.

Two gunmen in Hoods Raid a Lonely Inn.

Armed only with sticks, the licensee of a lonely inn and his brother fought of two hooded men armed with air pistols who tried early yesterday to hold up the innkeeper.

During the flight the licensee, Mr. Exall, 56, of the "Kent Hounds," Chelsfield, Kent, was shot in the arm and his head was injured.

His brother, Harry, 58, also received head injuries. Both are in hospital.

The brothers, after going to bed on Saturday night, heard the window being smashed, got up to investigate - and saw the two hooded figures on the veranda.

A Battle.

Mrs. Helena Exall, Fred's wife, said yesterday full:- "My husband and brother-in-law rushed at the men who each levelled an air pistol at Fred. One of them shot and hit him in the arm.

"The two men had Balaclava helmets pulled down over their faces.

"There was quite a battle. Both my husband and Harry was struck on the head with a butt end of the pistols.

"The gunmen finally ran away. But I think both were marked in the fight."
