The pub only lasted a few years with this name and in 1874 changed name to the "Engineer's Arms."

John Godwin takes over the license at least as early as 1861 when he is in court. It seems that Godwin was an Engineer and blacksmith as well as running the beer house. He is mentioned as being there until 1871/2 often operating without a license.

Gravesend Reporter, North Kent and South Essex Advertiser - Saturday 24 October 1857.

Mrs. Leeds of the "North Star" beer-house, was charged on summons with having her house open after hours on Saturday night last. Mr. White said he did not wish to press this case, as he had ascertained that the men seen coming out of the house were a gang from one of the coal hulks, who were not able to get ashore earlier. A person who attended for Mrs. Leeds stated that this was correct. The Mayor said the law was the law, and it must be administered; the house was seen open, and Mrs. Leeds was therefore liable to a fine, but from what had been stated he should only sentence her to pay the costs, the costs (6s. 6d.) were paid.
