Highway Robbery and Assault.
William Thompson, ostler at the "Rising Sun" public house, Lewisham, was charged
before Mr. Maude, with burglariously assault in George Tagg, and stealing from
him, the sum of 7d.
Prosecutor, a man about 70 years of age, said that on Monday night he was inside
the "Rising Sun," when he was thrust out into the road by a stout man, and while
lying there he was seized by the prisoner, who opened a knife, and cut his
waistcoat, which contained sufficient money for a night's lodging, right off, in
the "Queens highway." An inspector in court informed his worship that it was at
the same public house, a man was completely smothered in red lead, about three
months ago.
Mr. Maude:- That will probably be a matter for the visiting justices. It is a
very serious charge, and I shall reminds the prisoner till Friday.
