51 Queen Street Gravesend
Starting life as the "Pippin Tree" as early as 1705, 1724 saw it change name to the "Cherry Tree" until 1834 when it changed again to the "Town Arms." The name remained the same till 2000 when it became "Night Shades." The pub was rebuilt in 1847. It is said that in 1876 an English chess player called Joseph Henry Blackburne gave a blindfold display in the pub. Without given sight of the boards in play he won 7 games, drew 1 and lost none. The Gravesend Chess Club was founded the same night and still meets at the "Windmill Tavern" on Thursdays at 8 o'clock (Information by Chris Eve August 2013.)
