From the Kent Herald, 21 February 1833.

On Saturday and inquest was held at the sign of the "Unicorn," Greenwich, before Mr. C. J. Carrtar, Coroner for Kent, on view of the body of John Kieffe, who came by his death in the following dreadful manner. It appeared in evidence that on Monday last, the deceased, who was superintending the loading of an outward Bound East India Company's ship, the Castle Hentley, lying off Blackwall, was, by some accident (supposed to be by the tackle) knocked into the hold from the upper deck. Both his legs were broken, and he was otherwise dreadfully bruised. The unfortunate man was immediately removed to the Seaman's Hospital Ship Dreadnought, where every possible attention was paid to him, but he died on Friday morning at 6 o'clock.

Verdict:- Accidental death.

The deceased as left a widow and seven children to the lament his loss.
